Q: What Kansas community considers itself “The Golden Buckle on the Wheat Belt?”
Of course, this is just ONE of several mottoes this town has touted over the years. This community is also known as the “Mountain Climate Capital of Kansas” and the “Sunflower Capital of Kansas.”
A: Goodland, in Sherman County (in northwest Kansas)
Goodland is the county seat of Sherman County, in northwest Kansas. Like a lot of communities, the town has a nickname. The city of nearly 5,000 calls itself the “Golden Buckle on the Wheat Belt.”
Of course, that’s just ONE of several mottoes this town has tried out over the years. Goodland is also known as the “Mountain Climate Capital of Kansas,” the “Sunflower Capital of Kansas” and has sometimes used the motto: “We’re Waiting for You.”
Goodland is home to a giant reproduction of the painting “3 Sunflowers in a Vase," by Vincent Van Gogh.
The famous painting measures about 24 feet across and 32 feet high and rests on an 80-foot easel. All told, the painting and easel weigh about 40,000 pounds!
Speaking of sunflowers, Goodland is one of the few places in the United States where the daily price of sunflower seeds is determined (The other two are in North Dakota).
