Name that Town! - November 4, 2011

Q: This Kansas community is located 1,561 miles away from New York City – and the exact same number of miles away from San Francisco. We know this because a big sign at the edge of town says so. What’s the real name of this place that’s often called “Midway USA?”

A: Kinsley, Kan.

Kinsley, Kan., is not quite in the middle of nowhere, but it is the “Midway” point between New York City and San Francisco. From here, it’s exactly 1,561 miles to both of those coastal cities. Kinsley earned the name “Midway USA” in 1939 when the town was featured on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. But don’t take our word for it. Visit this Edwards County community for yourself and look for the sign on the edge of town.
