Good Vibrations - February 17, 2012

Q: Kansas is far from the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, but it does have a connection to the southern California surf sounds of the 1960s. The first manager of The Beach Boys – who was also the father of three band members - was born in Kansas. What’s his name…and where was he born?

A: Murry Wilson / Hutchinson

Murry Wilson

Musician and record producer Murry Wilson is best remembered as the first manager of The Beach Boys and the father of three of the band members – Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson.

Murry Wilson was also the uncle of band member Mike Love. Clearly, “beach music” wasn’t invented in Kansas. But Murry Wilson - the guy who helped create the legendary “Beach Boys sound” - was born in Hutchinson in 1917.

Here’s part of the sad story of Murry Wilson and the difficult relationship he had with his own sons – Beach Boys’ members Brian, Dennis and Carl:
