More than 20 veterans shared their stories in Lawrence Friday as part of a project collecting interviews with former military members.

Kerry Steuart served in the Air Force in the Middle East, and he says veterans face challenges after returning from conflict. For him, violent films and loud noises can trigger upsetting memories. Steuart hopes the interviews can help people understand those types of difficulties.

“Build awareness that there’s an opportunity to give back to them and understand from their perspective. Walk in their shoes just a little bit more and understand what they’re going through each and every day,” says Steuart.

Kansas Senator Pat Roberts’ office organized the event. The interviews will be archived by the Library of Congress as part of the Veterans History Project.
