Remembering Amelia Earhart, Atchison's Favorite Daughter

Amelia Earhart has been in the news a lot lately.  The post office in her hometown of Atchison will soon bear her name. Mattel has announced a new Amelia Earhart Barbie doll.  And new news stories have been circulating this month in which researchers claim to have finally solved the mystery of her disappearance.   Guest Commentator Bobbie Athon  reminds us who she was, what she did and why she's still worth remembering.

Guest Commentator Bobbie Athon is a lifelong Kansan and the public information officer for the Kansas Historical Society.  She lives in Topeka.  She'll bring us more essays about important Kansans in the coming months, as part of an occasional Kansas history series here on Kansas Public Radio.
