Two Teens Charged in Fatal Shooting

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Two teenagers are charged in a fatal shooting at a Kansas City, Kansas apartment building that also left a suspected co-conspirator dead. The Wyandotte County district attorney's office said yesterday (FRI) that Deon Graham and Tiara Harden are both charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 27-year-old Shavar Buckner. The two suspects, both 18, are also charged with aggravated robbery and conspiracy.

Brownback To Act on Budget This Weekend

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Governor Sam Brownback is still considering action on the state's budget, with a spokeswoman saying a decision is expected over the weekend. Legislators finished work on the budget on June 2nd, laying out how to spend $14.5 billion in each of the next two fiscal years. By law, the Republican governor has until tomorrow (SUN) to sign the bill, veto all or parts of the measure, or let it become law without his signature.

KCC Director Out

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The executive director of the Kansas Corporation Commission no longer works for the commission. KCC spokesman Jesse Borjon tells The Topeka Capital-Journal that as of yesterday (FRI), Patti Petersen-Klein was no longer employed by the commission. He did not specify if she was fired or quit.

Hutchinson To Become "Smallville" for Day 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hutchinson officials have agreed to rename their community Smallville for one day in a nod to its claim as boyhood home of one of the world's most recognizable superheros. Hutchinson's name change happens June 21st, the day Clark Kent is inducted into the Kansas Hall of Fame.
