At the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, seventeen-year-old Michael Andrew of Lawrence set a world record for his age group with his time in the 200-meter individual medley last (THUR) night. But Andrew probably won’t race against Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte (LOCK-tee) in the final tonight. Kansas Public Radio’s Greg Echlin explains.
Another northeast Kansas swimmer, Shannon Vreeland of Overland Park finished toward the end of the pack in the women’s freestyle semifinals. Vreeland was an Olympic gold medalist at the London 2012 games, but has struggled with shoulder issues in the last year and acknowledges that is likely the end of her swimming career.
