Kansas House Votes to Condemn Pornography

The Kansas House has advanced a resolution condemning pornography as a public health hazard. The resolution says it objectifies women and can be addictive. Republican Representative Randy Powell says technology has led to increased access to X-rated material.

“We don’t even know the damage we’ve created yet with the coming generation. I can tell you, it’s ugly, from the young men I’ve worked with. I’ve seen marriages destroyed,” said Powell.

Democratic Representative John Carmichael said the resolution doesn’t do enough to clarify the distinction between pornography and art. Carmichael said he agrees with some sentiments of the bill, but it raises First Amendment concerns.

“The difficulty is in a free society we have a First Amendment right to expression, freedom of expression,” says Carmichael

The non-binding resolution would have no legal effect.
