Pittsburg State President Declines Pay Increase

The Kansas Board of Regents recently approved 2 percent pay hikes for university presidents. The leaders of Kansas University, Wichita State, Kansas State, Pittsburg State and Fort Hays State all say they intend to either decline the raise, or donate the money to their schools. Pittsburg State President Steve Scott says he won’t accept any salary increase unless the school’s faculty and staff get a pay hike as well. Scott says he's concerned that Governor Sam Brownback could make deeper cuts to the higher education budget to offset a continuing budget shortfall later in the fiscal year. "We've got some challenges ahead of us, financially." Scott said. "It just didn't feel right for me to put in place a salary increase for myself without first taking care of the people I work with." The Board of Regents approved the raises for the presidents the same day it imposed a 3.6 percent tuition and fee increase on students.
