It’s the Law! Or…maybe it’s just the cat’s meow? - January 4, 2013

Q: One of the more unusual city ordinances that took effect on January 1 this year concerns the number of cats a person is allowed to own. In which Kansas community is it now ILLEGAL to have more than four cats in a household?

A: Wellington (in south-central Kansas)

In the south-central Kansas community of Wellington, a new law is now in effect concerning the number of cats a person can own. As of January 1, 2013, pet owners are limited to just four cats per household. The new city ordinance was passed in 2012 in response to the growing number of cats being picked up by local animal control officers. During the first 11 months of the year, the city of Wellington picked up 231 cats that had been terrorizing the city (or, at least, dogs in the city).
