Kansas state Senator Steve Fitzgerald is running for the seat of retiring Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins, hoping to keep it in Republican hands. Fitzgerald, a retired Army officer and Green Beret, is an outspoken conservative. He says he supports President Donald Trump and Trump's efforts to roll back federal environmental regulations and crack down on illegal immigration.

Fitzgerald is the first Republican to announce for the race in the 2nd Congressional District, which covers roughly the eastern third of the state. Former Kansas House Minority Leader Paul Davis...the Democratic Party's 2014 gubernatorial nominee...is expected to seek the Democratic nomination.
