Kansas Court: Secretary of State Violated Open Records Law

TOPEKA, Kan. (KNS/AP) - The Kansas Court of Appeals says the state's top election official violated the state's open records law when he had office computer software altered. The decision directed a lower court judge to order Secretary of State Scott Schwab to reverse the change so that software can again produce a statewide report on provisional ballots. The date was sought by the voting rights group Loud Light.

Kansas Attorney General Issues Opinion on Ectopic Pregnancy Treatment

TOPEKA, Kan. (KNS) - Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt issued an opinion saying that treatments of ectopic pregnancy and fetal demise do not count as abortions. Schmidt said in Friday's opinion that those procedures do not violate Kansas anti-abortion regulations as currently written. A lawmaker who is also a physician asked about the distinction ahead of the state's August 2nd vote on a constitutional amendment that would affect abortion rights.

Semitrailer Truck Fire Closes I-70 Traffic

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KPR/LJW) - A semitrailer caught fire on the Kansas turnpike Friday afternoon, closing down westbound traffic for several hours. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that emergency crews were called to the fire near the border of Douglas and Leavenworth counties. The semi was under the bridge where Kansas Highway 32 crosses Interstate 70. A spokesperson for the Kansas Highway Patrol said that no injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved.

OSHA Investigating Death of Branson Theme Park Worker

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) - Federal labor officials have launched an investigation into the death of a worker at Silver Dollar City theme park near Branson. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Labor says the employee was hospitalized Wednesday with head injuries allegedly sustained during maintenance and testing of a roller coaster. The employee was pronounced dead on Thursday. The employee had worked at the park since 2017. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened an investigation into the incident on Friday.
