Gov Signs Voter ID Bill Into Law

Governor Sam Brownback today (MON) signed into law a bill requiring voters to show ID at the polls. Supporters of the law have said it will help prevent voter fraud. Opponents believe it will suppress voter turnout, by making it difficult to register and vote. Governor Brownback said he believes showing ID at the polls makes sense.

The photo ID provision takes effect January 1st, 2012. The law will also require proof of citizenship when registering to vote for the first time in Kansas. That rule takes effect in 2013.
