A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9pm Friday until 9pm Saturday for much of the KPR listening area, including the cities of Topeka, Lawrence, Emporia, Kansas City, Atchison, Leavenworth, Abilene and Ottawa. The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued the advisory in advance of possible freezing rain, snow and ice.

TIMING: FREEZING RAIN OR FREEZING DRIZZLE IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS EAST CENTRAL KANSAS AFTER 9 PM WITH AREAS FROM HERINGTON TO ALMA AND TOPEKA DEVELOPING AROUND OR AFTER MIDNIGHT. THE FREEZING PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF BY MID MORNING SATURDAY. A TRANSITION TO SNOW IS EXPECTED SATURDAY AFTERNOON WITH SNOW CONTINUING THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING.
TOTAL SNOW AND ICE ACCUMULATIONS...ICE ACCUMULATIONS AROUND A TENTH OF AN INCH OR LESS ARE EXPECTED. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF ONE TO THREE INCHES ARE EXPECTED. NORTHWEST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH ARE EXPECTED SATURDAY EVENING, WHICH COULD CAUSE SOME BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW.
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW... SLEET... OR FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES... AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
WINTRY PRECIPITATION IS FORECAST TO ACCUMULATE IN THE AFFECTED AREAS CAUSING HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. THOSE WITH TRAVEL PLANS ARE ADVISED TO CHOOSE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE...OR SHOULD USE EXTREME CAUTION IF TRAVEL IS UNAVOIDABLE.
