Panel Begins Looking for Cost Savings in KS Courts

Chief Justice Lawton Nuss speaking to the panel. (Photo by Stephen Koranda)A panel has started work looking for ways to close a budget shortfall in the Kansas court system. The Kansas Supreme Court's chief justice, Lawton Nuss, told the group today (MON) that the courts face an $8 million budget deficit in the coming fiscal year. Nuss says he plans to ask lawmakers for more money, but he knows that in tight fiscal times, the budget group shouldn't expect any guarantees.

Nuss has previously said that the deficit could mean weeks of court closures and furloughs. The panel is slated to wrap up its work in five weeks.
