No Supreme Court justice in recent history has lost a retention election in Kansas. Democratic State Representative Jim Ward of Wichita believes that the retention election for Supreme Court justices this fall will be much more dramatic than those in the past.
Chief Justice Lawton Nuss, along with Justices Marla Luckert, Carol Beier, Dan Biles and Caleb Stegall are all up for retention. Nuss and Luckert were appointed by former Republican Governor Bill Graves, Beier and Biles by former Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Stegall by current Republican Governor Sam Brownback.
