KDOT Looking for Safe, Scenic Bike Routes in KS

Cyclists in rural Kansas. (Flickr Photo by Gene Bisbee)Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Mike King says the agency is working to find safe, scenic roads for bicyclists and pedestrians. King says there are state roads in Kansas that may be best avoided by bikes and left to car and truck traffic. He says they're looking for alternative roads that are better for bikes and considering improvements to make them more bike friendly.

King's comments follow the death of 66-year-old Cal Melick last week in rural Douglas County. Melick, of Lawrence, was a librarian at Washburn University. His bicycle was struck head-on by a truck attempting to pass another vehicle.
