KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Wyandotte County judge has ordered six days in jail for a community activist accused of having indirect contact with victims in a criminal case. The Kansas City Star reports that 39-year-old Tamika Pledger is charged with involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery. She's accused of running into a group of teenagers in January. Tierra Smith, a 17-year-old from Raytown, died from her injuries about a week after the crash. Pledger had a televised press conference May 19 during which she offered condolences to the Smith family, despite an order from District Judge Robert Serra forbidding direct or indirect contact with any of the victims or their families. Prosecutors say Smith's parents were "extremely upset" after seeing the broadcast. Serra ordered Pledger taken into custody Monday for contempt of court.
