Brownback Cites Court Vacancies in Support of Trump

Governor Sam Brownback has told reporters that he remains solid in his support for Donald Trump, in spite of recent controversies. Brownback said the primary issue, in his view, is the selection of Supreme Court justices -specifically the replacement of Antonin Scalia - a conservative justice who died early in the year.

President Obama has nominated U.S. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Merrick Garland for the open position but Senate Republicans have blocked consideration of the nominee. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has promised to appoint judges who are in favor of abortion rights. Trump has said his nominations would be “in the Scalia mold” of more conservative justices. Brownback is joined by other leading Kansas Republicans in supporting the party's nominee. Secretary of State Kris Kobach and U.S. Representative Lynn Jenkins have also recently re-affirmed their support for Trump.
