Tax Fight Likely Coming to the Kansas Statehouse

Republicans and Democrats are braced for a fight over whether state government in Kansas should continue to cash in on the ramifications of the 2017 federal tax cut. That fight could come soon.

The federal tax cut triggered changes on the state level. That means the minority of Kansans who itemized on their state taxes may no longer be able to, so they have to pay the state more. A new committee in the state Senate aims to fix that.

House Tax Committee Chairman Steven Johnson says many Republicans want to address what they see as unintended consequence of the federal changes.

“It absolutely was not part of our plan in 2017, and in fact we actually expanded itemized deductions in 2017,” Johnson says.

Democratic Governor Laura Kelly’s administration has repeatedly urged lawmakers to hold off on any more changes to the tax code.
