School Finance Leaves Uncertainty

Wichita Public Schools and the local teachers union are delaying decisions on what to do with additional funds the new school finance bill would provide. That's because they're not convinced the Kansas Supreme Court will find the increase adequate. Union president Steve Wentz says this does create some uncertainty but for now they're focusing on other issues while they wait for the court's decision.

Kansas education experts say they haven’t seen signs that other school districts are delaying spending decision, but say that wouldn’t surprise them. Oral arguments before the court are expected to begin later this month with a decision expected in June.
