Audit Shows Problems in KS DMV Upgrades

(Photo by Stephen Koranda)A state audit reveals a DMV modernization contract in Kansas was cancelled earlier this year after being plagued with problems. The Kansas Department of Revenue ended the contract with 3M in May, after paying the company around $20 million out of a $22 million contract. The audit found problems with how both 3M and the state managed the upgrade. Republican Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan told a legislative committee today (WED) that some of the problems were already in place when he took over in 2011.

“The milestones, the benchmarks were made in a prior KDOR administration. I’m not saying that to point fingers,” says Jordan.

The audit notes that problems occurred under Jordan’s tenure and the previous Democratic governor's administration. The issues led to long lines and processing delays at some vehicle registration offices in 2012. A second phase updating the state’s driver’s license system is also behind schedule and hasn’t yet been launched.
