The Kansas Supreme Court will hear arguments today (MON) in a lawsuit over school funding. A group of parents and school districts are arguing that the state needs to increase education spending to comply with the Kansas Constitution’s requirement for suitable education funding. The state is arguing that the level of education spending is reasonable, and it’s up to lawmakers, not the courts, to decide how much school funding is adequate under the Kansas Constitution. Peter Hancock is the education reporter for the Lawrence Journal-World. He’ll be watching for cues from the justices on how they might rule.
A decision in the case could come before the next legislative session starts in January, but there are questions if lawmakers in the Statehouse would follow a Supreme Court order to increase education funding.
