Kansas Adjutant General Lee Tafanelli says his department has cancelled soldier training for this weekend because of the federal government shutdown. The training for many of the state’s 7,000 soldiers and airmen in the National Guard is scheduled to take place monthly.
Tafanelli says the work stoppage has not hurt the readiness of the Kansas National Guard to respond to disasters, but he says the preparedness of the department will be reduced if the shutdown becomes lengthy. He says his department, which oversees the Kansas National Guard, has sent around 700 employees home on furlough. That's about 1/3 rd of the Adjutant General's staff.
