Local Red Cross Chapter Helping With Hurricane Response

The Topeka branch of the American Red Cross is one of many local chapters assisting people affected by Hurricane Irene. Two local workers have taken a response vehicle to help feed those displaced by the storm. Greg Simms is with the Kansas Capital Area Chapter of the Red Cross. He says more than 250 emergency response vehicles have been dispatched to the East Coast.

The Red Cross is urging people who want to help to donate money. The group is also in need of blood donations because the hurricane shut down more than 50 blood drives.

Stephen Koranda is KPR's Statehouse reporter.
