George Mitchell served a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Senate, representing the state of Maine from 1980 to 1995, and serving as Majority Leader his last six years in the Senate. He has continued a busy career of public service since leaving the Senate, as Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from 2009 to 2011, Special Envoy for Northern Ireland from 1996 to 2001, and leading the investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball in 2006 and 2007.
