In celebration of Black History Month, University of Kansas professor Shawn Leigh Alexander tells the story of the Afro-American Council and its predecessor, the Afro-American League. Organized in the 1890s, the Council was the first national civil rights organization in the United States, and set the stage for the emergence of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Persons. Alexander chronicles the story of the Afro-American Council in his new book, An Army of Lions. We'll also hear from KU professors John Rury and Shirley Hill about efforts to "equalize" African-American high schools, and what happened in secondary education before and after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. Rury and Hill are the authors of the new book, The African-American Struggle for Secondary Education, 1940-1980.
