Nicodemus & the African-American Plains Experience

image of Nicodemus & the African-American Plains ExperienceJoin us for a look at Nicodemus, Kansas, an all-black town settled by former slaves in 1877. On March 11th, Johnson County Community College will host Flyin' West, a play about life in Nicodemus, as well as a presentation from Angela Bates, the executive director of the Nicodemus Historical Society. Join us 8:00 Sunday night for a conversation with Angela West, the cast and crew of Flyin' West, and Dr. Jim Leiker, director of the Kansas Studies Institute at JCCC.

Kaye starts her weekends the same way you do: with Weekend Edition, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, This American Life, and The Moth Radio Hour. She started at Kansas Public Radio in 2001; in 2006, she became the producer of our weekly public affairs program, KPR Presents, which changed its name in 2025 to Prairie Journal. In her spare time, she loves to read, travel, and attend theater.
