Do we have the power to chose our own family? Or are we bound by the past? Can we shape our own future? These are some of the questions Kate Hamer asks in her latest novel, The Doll Funeral. The story centers on 13-year-old Ruby, who finds out her parents aren't her real parents, and is thrilled with the news. She runs away from her abusive home in search of her real parents, and is taken in by a group of siblings living in the forest. What Ruby experiences leaves her uncertain about what is real and what is not. On this edition of Conversations, Hamer talks about how The Doll Funeral crosses genres and has been referred to as a modern fairytale by reviewers. Hamer's previous novel, The Girl in the Red Coat, was an Amazon Best Book of 2016. Kate Hamer lives in Cardiff, Wales.
