This is free three-day festival of the music and mind of American composer Charles Ives, including TWO performances of his Concord Sonata.
Charles Ives published his Piano Sonata No. 2, “Concord, Mass., 1840–60” in 1920. This celebrated composition, one of Ives’s most formidable achievements, features a dynamic fusion of American Transcendentalism, European classical music, and musical borrowing that helped bring Ives into the public eye through its New York premiere by John Kirkpatrick in 1939.
Hear Cooper McGuire and Alicia Willard perform Charles Ives's "General Booth Enters Into Heaven" followed by a chat with UMKC Conservatory of Music professor of music theory and composition David Thurmaier and piano professor Thomas Rosenkranz, who will do one of the Concord Sonatas.
