Governor Appoints New Kansas Appeals Court Judge

TOPEKA, Kan. (KPR) - A Shawnee County district judge has been appointed the newest judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals. Governor Laura Kelly announced the appointment Friday of Judge Rachel Pickering of Topeka to the Court of Appeals. If confirmed by the Kansas Senate, Pickering will become the first Hispanic judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals She would fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Anthony Powell at the end of June.

KU Football Player Charged for Aggravated Assault

LAWRENCE, Kan. (LJW/KPR) - A University of Kansas football player has been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly threatening a man with a handgun. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that 21-year-old Trevor Wilson of Tallahassee, Florida, was formally charged Friday with aggravated assault with a handgun, a low-level felony. Charges against a second KU football player, 20-year-old Tanaka Scott Jr. of Lawrence, were dismissed. The charges stemmed from a incident where Wilson and Scott were alleged to have threatened a man from different vehicles while driving. No one was physically injured in the incident.

Sporting KC Marks 1,000th Game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCStar/KPR) - Sporting Kansas City will play its 1,000th competitive match when it faces the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday. The Kansas City Star reports the team was founded by Lamar Hunt in 1995 as the Kansas City Wiz, and became the Kansas City Wizards before becoming Sporting Kansas City in 2020. The rebranding coincided with the team's move from Arrowhead Stadium to Children's Mercy Park.

Lawrence Holds "Clear the Shelter" Day

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KPR/LJW) - The Lawrence Humane Society is marking its 8th Annual Clear the Shelter Day this weekend. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the shelter is waiving adoption fees as part of a nationwide pet adoption campaign aimed at matching every animal in the shelter with a family by the end of the day. Typically, adoption fees at the Lawrence shelter are around $150 for adult dogs, $300 for puppies, $60 for adult cats, and $125 for kittens. The Lawrence Humane Society says every animal that is adopted will go home spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped.
