The state of Kansas is honoring an army veteran who's spent the past 30 years volunteering to feed the hungry in his hometown. The Kansas Department for Children and Families has recognized 96-year-old Murl Corbet for helping distribute commodities to his community as part of the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program. Corbet, a former mayor of Yates Center, fought during World War II. He says he's just been honoring a commitment he made years ago.
Corbet helped turn Yates Center into a distribution center for the food assistance program. Today, it serves more than 200 local families. After three decades as a volunteer with the program, Corbet is finally retiring. On Monday, state officials presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his many years of service.
