Brownback Praises Kansas Congressman Pompeo's Appointment to CIA Post

Kansas officials say a special election will be held to replace Pompeo.
Kansas officials say a special election will be held to replace Pompeo.

Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo of the Kansas 4th District will leave his seat in Congress to serve as CIA director for President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. Pompeo’s appointment hinges on approval by the US Senate, a process that Governor Sam Brownback, a former Senator himself, is familiar with. Brownback says that Senate confirmation is never easy, but he says, Pompeo is well qualified for the job.

When Pompeo leaves Kansas to take the CIA job, the U.S. Constitution mandates a special election must be held to replace him in Congress. Kansas Elections Director Brian Caskey says that process will start when Pompeo officially resigns.

Traditionally, Caskey says, such resignations happen right after the new session of Congress starts in January.
