During his final State of the Union address, President Obama reiterated his desire to close Guantanamo Bay prison. One of the more controversial aspects of his proposal to shut down the prison involves the transfer of detainees to the U.S. mainland. The U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth is among the sites being considered to house the detainees. Kansas Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins is adamantly opposed to the idea and says she’s not alone.
The other members of the Kansas Congressional delegation, all Republicans, along with Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, also oppose the transfer of suspected terrorists to the U.S. mainland.
