The Speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives is broaching the topic of school district consolidation. According to today's (SUN) Topeka Capital-Journal, a memo from Ray Merrick to House Republicans calls for "common sense reorganization" and notes the high administrative costs for teaching students in small school districts. More than 30 Kansas school districts have fewer than 200 students. Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley calls the proposal an attack on small, rural school districts. Other topics in the 12-page "Know the Facts" memo include taxes, transportation, and funding for higher education.
