(AP) — Kansas National Guard leaders are briefing employees at the Salina and Fort Riley maintenance sites about cuts in military spending, including layoffs and the closure of one facility in Salina. The cuts are a result of a decision by the Department of Defense to reduce spending at five maintenance sites across the country, including Fort Riley and Salina. Adjutant General Major General Lee Tafanelli is meeting with employees on Friday to discuss the cuts, which will result in the elimination of 45 jobs in Salina and 58 of the 137 jobs at Fort Riley. The National Guard expects the budget for the maintenance facilities to be cut by $15 million in the next federal fiscal year starting October 1. The maintenance sites rebuild and refurbish military equipment for the Department of Defense.
