A Topeka city councilmember went above and beyond the call of civic duty this week, rescuing a man who had been pinned under a car. Council member John Alcala told WIBW Radio that he had a doctor's appointment, and was waiting for his ride when he heard a woman scream from across the street.
Alcala says he was able to lock the jack and lift the car off the man's chest. He then called 9-1-1, and the man was taken to a Topeka hospital. Alcala says the experience gave him a hands-on look at what police and firefighters do every day...and says those are the people who deserve the credit.
