Film Music Friday - April 2, 2021 (Jazz in Film)

This week's Film Music Friday explores the use of jazz in the movies. Several factors, including the demise of the big band era, rising costs and the emergence of film noir led to increasing use of jazz in film scoring in the 1950's. We'll hear some examples, including music from A Streetcar Named Desire, The Man with the Golden Arm, The Wild One, Anatomy of a Murder, Bullitt and Whiplash.

Alfred Newman is one of the greatest of all film composers, winner of NINE Academy Awards (more than any other musician) and one of the fathers of modern film scoring. This week's Film Music Friday is devoted to rejected scores, movie music that for whatever reason was deemed unsuitable and was (often unceremoniously) dropped from the film.  As a film composer it seems you're nobody 'til you've had at least one score rejected.  We'll hear excerpts from Bernard Herrmann's unused score for Hitchcock's Torn Curtain, plus rejected scores from The Exorcist, 2001: A Space Oddysey, The Journey of Natty Gann and more.

Film Music Friday - January 22, 2021 (Henry Mancini)

Henry Mancini is probably the most popular and successful film composer of the 20th century, with iconic scores for films like Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Pink Panther, Experiment in Terror, Hatari and many more.  This week's Film Music Friday explores the music of Henry Mancini, with excerpts from many of his most famous works.
