Heartland Chamber Music Festival August 3, 2017

Heartland Chamber Music brought their Festival Scholars Quartets, as well as the Camerata Chamber orchestra, to the KPR studios in advance of their concerts this weekend (August 4-5, 2017) on the JCCC campus. The orchestra played the first two movements of Grieg's Holberg Suite, followed by quartets with Mendelssohn's Op. 12 and Op. 44/1. ​Conductor Chris Kelts talked with Michael Keelan about the program.

Charles Stegeman and David Allen Wehr stopped by the Kansas Public Radio Live Performance Studio and previewed the 2017 Sunflower Music Festival by performing Beethoven's Sonata for violin and piano in G major. The festival runs from June 9-17 at White Concert Hall at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

Conductor Laureate of the Seattle Symphony, Gerard Schwarz, made the orchestra world-class during his tenure. Michael Keelan talked with him about his new book, Behind the Baton. Jennifer Rowley, first-time leading lady at the Metropolitan Opera

Jennifer Rowley will step in for Patricia Racette on the entire run of Cyrano de Bergerac, by Franco Alfano, at the Met in New York. The opera, based on the well-known play by Edmond Rostand, also stars Roberto Alagna. Michael Keelan talks with Rowley about being a Met leading lady, and what might come next for her. Pianist Simone Dinnerstein on playing Mozart in Havana

With the recent thawing of relations between the U.S. and Cuba, Simone Dinnerstein went to Havana and recorded two Mozart concertos with the Havana Lyceum Orchestra, made up of students and young professional musicians. Michael Keelan talked with her about that and her cadenzas (solo sections) in Concerto No. 21.
