Xiayin Wang records the best of Granados

Pianist Xiayin Wang has recorded the famous Goyescas, based on paintings of Francisco Goya (1746-1828), by Enrique Granados (1867-1916). She talked with Michael Keelan from Steinway Hall in New York about the character of the great Spanish pianist and composer, who died when his ship was torpedoed by Germany during WWI.

KC Ballet celebrates its 60th anniversary with Diamonds

The 60th Anniversary Dance Festival of the Kansas City Ballet at the Kauffman Center aptly features Diamonds, with music by Tchaikovsky and choreography by Balanchine. Michael Keelan talked with dancer Elysa Hotchkiss about a ballerina's process of melding the music and dance steps.

Rachel Barton Pine on her recording of Elgar and Bruch

Violinist Rachel Barton Pine is known for her catholic taste in music, performing everything from the standard Romantic concertos to baroque rarities on period equipment. Her new album features the first Bruch concerto, an audience favorite, with the underperformed (and perhaps misunderstood) Elgar concerto. The BBC Symphony is led by Andrew Litton. Violinist Elena Urioste visited the KPR studios in advance of her Jan. 13 concert with the Topeka Symphony. She played the Sarabande from Bach's second partita, and talked with Michael Keelan about her concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Kyle Wylie Pickett discussed both that and Brahms' first symphony, also on the program.

Violinist Maria Milstein and Marcel Proust's inspiration

Maria and Nathalia Milstein have released a new album, La sonate de Vinteuil (The Vinteuil Sonata), which includes some of the pieces that may have inspired Marcel Proust as he described the entrancing music composed by Vinteuil, a character in his massive novel, In Search of Lost Time. The album also features songs of Reynaldo Hahn. Maria Milstein talked with Michael Keelan from Lyon, France.

Holiday Vespers 2017

Holiday Vespers is the annual Yuletide concert at the University of Kansas, featuring the KU choirs and symphony.  This year's concert includes traditional carols for the season plus Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and a musical setting by composer Randol Alan Bass of the Christmas poem The Night Before Christmas.  Recorded December 3, 2017 at the Lied Center.
