Cellist Inbal Segev and pianist Juho Pohjonen have joined forces for their first album together, playing Chopin, Grieg, and Schumann. Michael Keelan talked with them about performing and recording the music of three pianist-composers.

2018 International Institute of Young Musicians contest winners July 11, 2018

Winners of the International Institute of Young Musicians competition played in the KPR studio ahead of the July 14 winners' concert at 3 p.m. in Swarthout Hall. Eric Lin played Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13. Joshua Jensen performed Scarbo from Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit. Beethoven's "Tempest" Sonata was played by Junhao Wang of Lawrence, and Yu Lei concluded with Horowitz's transcription of Danse Macabre, by Saint-Saens.

Miss Kansas Hannah Klaassen and music

Miss Kansas 2018, Hannah Klaassen, majors in psychology at Tabor College in Hillsboro. But she minors in music, which has been a focus through most of her school years. Michael Keelan talked with her about the role that singing (and playing) has in her life.

A Musical Tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg celebrates 25 years on the Supreme Court this year. She's an avid classical music fan, even appearing onstage in opera productions. Her son, James Ginsburg, founded Cedille Records, which has released an album, Notorious RBG in Song. It refers to the justice's pop culture moniker, and features songs written and performed by his wife, Patrice Michaels. Michael Keelan talked with both J. Ginsburg and Michaels about their very personal project.

The Violetta Duo visited the Lawrence Public Library for KPR's first live performance at the venue. Flutist Dorothy Glick Maglione and clarinetist Madelyn Moore talked with Michael Keelan. So did composer Daniel Morel, whose music the duo performed along with Arnold, McIntosh, and Rutter.  

Amit Peled plays Brahms on the cello of Pablo Casals

Pablo Casals (1876-1973) was one of the most revered classical musicians of the twentieth century. The 1733 Gofriller cello he played for most of his career is now in the hands of Amit Peled, at the express invitation of Mrs. Casals. Michael Keelan talked with Peled about the legacy of Casals and the experience of working with the instrument. Peled's album of the Brahms sonatas on that cello is with pianist Noreen Polera.

Xiayin Wang records the best of Granados

Pianist Xiayin Wang has recorded the famous Goyescas, based on paintings of Francisco Goya (1746-1828), by Enrique Granados (1867-1916). She talked with Michael Keelan from Steinway Hall in New York about the character of the great Spanish pianist and composer, who died when his ship was torpedoed by Germany during WWI.

KC Ballet celebrates its 60th anniversary with Diamonds

The 60th Anniversary Dance Festival of the Kansas City Ballet at the Kauffman Center aptly features Diamonds, with music by Tchaikovsky and choreography by Balanchine. Michael Keelan talked with dancer Elysa Hotchkiss about a ballerina's process of melding the music and dance steps.
