Summer is a great time to tour the Kansas Statehouse, in part because it's far less crowded and busy. From top to bottom, this building is a magnificent showpiece of art and architecture. Check out the stately and ornate Kansas Senate chamber, notice the detailed brass and copper fittings along every stairwell, stand inside the rotunda and look up inside the spectacular dome and marvel at the murals located throughout the building. You will be impressed. Yes, the renovation of the building took several years and cost about $330 million. But most visitors agree: it was worth every penny. From the sturdy limestone foundation in the basement to the statue named Ad Astra, the Kansa Indian who stands atop the capital dome, this is an amazing and inviting place. Visitors can't help but be inspired by the beauty and splendor displayed on every floor. Push politics aside some morning or afternoon and simply immerse yourself in the wonders of Kansas art, architecture, craftsmanship and history. You'll be glad you did. - J. Schafer
