New KDOT System Makes it Easier to Park Big Rigs

A new multi-state system is providing truckers with real-time information about parking, which they can use when it’s time for a federally required break.

Davonna Moore, with the Kansas Department of Transportation, says the system could reduce congestion and keep trucks from parking on the side of the road or other locations that aren’t as safe.

“We hope to see a decrease in accidents and fatigue, a decrease in the time for truck drivers to look for parking. An increase in safety,” Moore says.

The system electronically monitors truck parking and sends out that data to roadside signs and mobile phone apps. The $30 million project is funded mostly through a federal grant.
