"Magic Mike" Benefits from Good Cast and Great Director

Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum star in the film "Magic Mike" (Photo Credit: Warner Bros.)Director Steven Soderbergh got his start as an independent filmmaker, known for his art-house movies like "sex, lies, and videotape" and "Kafka." But in the last twenty years, he's become known as the director behind successful mainstream releases like "Erin Brockovich" and all the Ocean's 11 films. Now, he's made a movie that brings a raunchy subculture to a theatre near you. Reviewer Abby Olcese says that "Magic Mike" could have been a disaster...but benefits from Soderbergh's steady vision and a great script.

"Magic Mike" is currently playing in theatres nationwide. Abby Olcese writes about movies for Kansas Public Radio. You can see more of her work at her blog, No More Popcorn.
