The University of Kansas has selected a new head for the Office of Multicultural Affairs, which works on diversity issues and assists multicultural students. Interim Director Precious Porras will take over the job on a permanent basis. She says the university has made improvements on social justice issues in recent years but protests by students over race issues show there’s more to do.
“It’s going to take a while to undo that system and it’s slow work, but it’s work that we will continue to do. I feel really confident that in my leadership of the office we will continue this conversation for a very long time to come,” says Porras.
Porras says while race issues have attracted attention recently, she doesn’t want it to fade out of the spotlight in the coming months. She hopes to boost outreach from the office and work with other organizations inside and outside KU on multicultural issues.
