KS Geological Survey Begins Annual Water Well Measuring

On January 2, the Kansas Geological Survey will head out west to measure levels in water wells - about 1,400 of them. Rex Buchanan is the Survey's interim director.

Water levels in some parts of central and western Kansas have dropped significantly over the years due to drought and increased irrigation.

Buchanan says the water wells are measured in the dead of winter because that's when most wells are shut-down, providing far more accurate readings.
