The Heartland Health Monitor reporting collaboration spotlights health issues in the Midwest.

Financial problems for one of the world’s leading biofuels companies are causing ripples in the Kansas economy.  The Spanish company Abengoa has idled two ethanol plants in Kansas, laying off workers at facilities in Colwich and Hugoton.  As Heartland Health Monitor's Bryan Thompson reports, the company's cellulosic ethanol plant in Hugoton opened with much fanfare about a year ago.

In addition to its plant in southwest Kansas, Abengoa shut down its facility in Colwich, near Wichita.  The global company filed for legal protection November 25th because of heavy debts.  Company officials could not be reached for comment on this story.
