Three Topeka Kids Killed in Turnpike Crash

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW/KPR) - Three Topeka children were killed Saturday morning in a collision on the Kansas Turnpike south of Topeka. WIBW reports that the children were in a minivan that was attempting to turn through the highway barrier when it was struck from the rear by a semi-truck driven by 70-year-old Robert Russell of Huntsville, Alabama.  The three were identified as 8-year-old Brooklyn Peery, 9-year-old Kylie Lund, and 9-year-old Laila El Azari.  A fourth child was hospitalized with serious injuries.  The minivan driver and a fifth child were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Russell was not injured.

Missouri Man Charged in Kidnapping Case

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KC Star/KPR) - The investigation is continuing into an alleged kidnapping and sexual assault in Clay County, Missouri.  The Kansas City Star reports that a malnourished woman escaped from an Excelsior Springs home Friday morning and sought help from neighbors.  In a news release, the Clay County Sheriff's office said that the woman reported she had been held against her will for a "significant period of time." Timothy Haslett Jr. has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape, and second-degree assault.  The victim was hospitalized in stable condition.

TCU Breaks KU Football's Winning Streak

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KPR) - The TCU Horned Frogs handed the Kansas Jayhawks their first loss of the season Saturday, 38-31.  KU quarterback Jalon Daniels missed the second half after suffering a shoulder injury at the end of the first half.  Jason Bean, who  started KU's first nine game last year, threw four touchdown passes in the second half, but TCU withstood KU's second half charge.
