Kansas School Districts Request More Funds

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ More than three dozen Kansas school districts are expected to ask top state officials for additional money due to budget concerns. Republican Governor Sam Brownback and the GOP-dominated Legislature's eight top leaders are meeting Aug. 24 to consider the requests. The extra funds are limited by law to $12.3 million. Kansas City's district is asking for $2.7 million of that.

State Seeks to Collect More Child Support Payments

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas is seeking to boost child support collections with a new ad campaign. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the campaign will urge businesses to report new hires for collection purposes. Kansas law currently requires employers to provide the names of newly hired workers to the Department of Labor within 20 days of the hire.

Wichita Garage Fire Claims Life

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Authorities say a man has died in a garage fire in Wichita. KAKE-TV reports that an explosion happened around 11:30 a.m. yesterday (Saturday). Battalion Chief Brad Boyd said that when crews arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a detached garage.

Elwood Woman Faces Multiple Charges in Murder Case

 ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) _ A Kansas woman faces an upgraded charge in the stabbing death of a man whose body was dumped in a river in northwest Missouri. The St. Joseph News-Press reports that 43-year-old Kelli Hoard, of Elwood, Kansas initially was charged with second-degree murder in the killing of 28-year-old Richard Berry. Now, she faces charges of first-degree murder, armed criminal action and abandonment of a corpse.

Chiefs Dominate in Pre-Season Opener

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) _Kansas City backup Chase Daniel threw for three touchdowns and the Chiefs beat the Cardinals 34-19 in the teams' preseason opener last (Saturday) night in Arizona. The Chiefs came back from an early 10 point deficit.

Royals Roll Over Angels

 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Salvador Perez homered to lead off a six-run second inning, Johnny Cueto won his second consecutive start for Kansas City, and the Royals rolled to a 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels last (Saturday) night. Cueto allowed one run and eight hits over eight innings, striking out four without a walk.

Sporting Kansas City Scores Victory Over Vancouver

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ Paulo Nagamura scored two late goals to give Sporting Kansas City a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC last (Saturday) night.
