Former Wichita Coach Sentenced to Ten Years

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH/KPR) - A former assistant volleyball coach at Wichita State University has been sentenced to more than ten years in prison.  KWCH reports that Jeffrey Sanders was sentenced Friday for sexual exploitation of a child and intimidation of a witness.  Sanders was found guilty of those charges in September, almost four years after his arrest.  The victim was 16-years-old at the time.  KAKE reports that Sanders owned the Wichita Volleyball Academy, where he coached hundreds of girls each year and offered private volleyball lessons.

Leavenworth Inmate Charged with Attempted Murder

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV/KPR) - An inmate at Leavenworth Penitiary has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a correctional officer.  KCTV reports that a federal grand jury in Kansas City charged 46-year-old Warren Richardson, who was accused of using a handmade weapon to stab two prison guards in February 2021.  Other charges include two counts of assaulting a correctional officer with a deadly weapon.  The FBI is investigating the case.

KCK/Wyandotte County Will Fund Search of Former KCK Detective's Cases

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP/KPR/KC Star) — The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, plans to spend up to $1.7 million on technology to help search decades of files connected to a former police detective accused of abusing women and girls. The Unified Government Commission voted Thursday to find funding to help the Wyandotte County District Attorney's office review cases involving Roger Golubski. The former KCK detective is accused in two federal indictments of sexually exploiting Black females for decades, and of being connected to a sex-trafficking operation. District Attorney Marc Dupree told commissioners that most of the files involving Golubski are paper files stored in boxes in an old jail. The Kansas City Star reports that the 69-year-old Golubski remains under house arrest in Edwardsville.

Overland Park Family Escapes Fire

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV/KPR) - An Overland Park family of five escaped a house fire Friday, thanks to one of their children.  KCTV reports that the Overland Park Fire Department was called to the two-story home to find it engulfed in flames.  The family escaped the house when a child alerted the family that a smoke alarm was going off.   The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Washburn Ends Volleyball Season with Tourney Loss

TOPEKA, Kan. (KPR) - The 15th-ranked Washburn women's volleyball team lost its match Friday in the Central Region of the NCAA Division 2 tournament, so the Ichabods season is over.  Minnesota-Duluth, the 6th-ranked team in the country, defeated the Ichabods in four sets.  Last year, Washburn made it all the way to the national championship match and finished as the runner-up.  The Ichabods ended this season with a 24-8 record.

Emporia State Loses Soccer Regional Final

EMPORIA, Kan. (KPR) - In the NCAA Division 2 women's soccer tournament, Emporia State lost its regional final against Bemidji State of Minnesota.  The match was tied, 1-1, after regulation and the Hornets lost in a shootout.  Emporia State was playing in its first regional final for women's soccer.
